Before Restoration According to the National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet, this building was demolished a few years ago. Pioneers brought furs, farm produce, and homemade goods to such a place to barter for things they needed. A display of wooden shoes and the tools used to make them brought to mind the German settlers of pioneer Spencer County, many of whom wore wooden shoes. The old photo above shows the Market and Barter House to the right of the James Gentry Mansion. Note the wooden wheeled wagon to the right. A closer view of the Barter House. |
